I busted my butt applying for this Masters program in Public Administration (MPA). I had an A-1 essay & goal statement, an acceptable undergraduate grade-point average, graduate degree experience already under my belt, & work experience that fit what I would be taking classes for (non-profit management). I hustled till the deadline date to get all my stuff in and I just made it. Surely it would all pay-off in just a couple weeks when I learned of my acceptance. Well that day was supposed to be today. I had my interview with the department head. She told me that my GPA was good, my work experience was right on track, & they would be happy to have me in their program, especially with my diverse school background (technical writing). However, my undergraduate classes didn't prepare me enough for the program; It would be "too much for me to handle!" So in order for me to be admitted into the program I will have to take 4 (not 1, but 4!!!) prep courses in Statistics, Accounting, Macroeconomics, & Political Science with a grade of C or better (and I HATE math)! I wish you could hear the frustration in my deep breaths and the disappointment on my countenance. It sucks how you do so much to get ahead and it only leaves you back where you started. I can't even fathom spending that amount of time, energy, stress, & money on 4 courses that won't even profit towards my degree, but just to be able to say on paper that I did it. Surely, I know for a fact I can accomplish that degree without them, but she said they are mandatory. Such is life! You conjure up the courage & fight to climb one mountain only to find there are numerous mandatory hills to get over before you can even get to the mountain! Alas! My compass seems to be broken. Perhaps Captain Jack Sparrow will let me borrow his!
