Riding back from South Bend, Indiana today, my gps system took us back a different, shorter route. We cut through a few towns for a distance of about 28 miles to get to the main freeway that would take us all the way back to the city. About 3 miles into the shortcut, my mom began to get nervous about the towns we were driving through. Not a sight of "us" anywhere! It was very country. My mom kept looking to see if she could spot any colored folk in sight...nope! Then my sister came up with this brilliant idea. They should come out with a gps for black people. And I thought that was a rather clever idea. The gps would be automatically set to take us the alternate directions to avoid the places where blacks are not wanted...for safety purposes. In my travels I noticed that there a still quite a handful of places that are not yet comfortable with us. It's a sad truth. It doesn't bother me; I actually find it pretty funny. Today when checking out of our hotel and getting breakfast, there was a slew of white people. Some of them weren't happy to see us at all. Others looked in fascination (for some strange reason). I seriously thought about making a public announcement: "ATTENTION EVERYBODY!!! I HAVE A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE! IN CASE YOU DIDN'T GET THE MEMO...YOUR PRESIDENT IS BLACK!!!! EVERYTHING'S GONNA BE OKAY NOW!" LOL I really wanted to do it, then leave.
